When I look at Caleb Williams, I expect him to be a better decision maker this year. Sometimes when you get to the next level, even if you’re talented, it takes a season to get accustomed to it. Even the greatest quarterbacks we’ve ever had went through that first-year adjustment period. Now that Caleb’s in that second year, he’s more comfortable with what he can and can’t get away with. He just has to make better decisions and pick his spots when he wants to be Caleb Williams. He’s auto talented, he can scramble, extend plays, make magic, but this isn’t college anymore. You can’t do that every play in the NFL and expect it to work. I don’t think he did a bad job last year, he just picked the wrong times to take those chances.
That’s why I think he’s ready to take a big leap. I believe Caleb can turn himself into a top 10 or top 12 quarterback in the league this year. There are thirty two quarterbacks, so that’s top one third, that’s elite company. He’s got the right pieces around him, and the people developing him are some of the best. Look at what Ben Johnson did with Jared Goff in Detroit, they went from a team in transition to one of the top offenses in the league. That’s a blueprint right there. Why can’t Caleb do the same thing in Chicago? Through four games this season, he’s thrown for 927 yards, 8 touchdowns, and only 2 picks with a QBR around 65. He even had a 298 yard, 4 touchdown game against Dallas where he didn’t get sacked once, that’s growth.
What I love seeing is that he’s learning how to trust his pocket, trust his reads, and still be himself when the play breaks down. That’s what separates a highlight player from a franchise quarterback. Once he finds that balance, when to use his legs and when to use his mind, Caleb Williams won’t just be good, he’ll be special.
